It is true that there is hardly a US based Fortune-500 company which does not have an IIT alumnus in its senior management. Rajat Gupta, Senior Partner Worldwide of McKinsey & Company

Rajat Gupta, ex-Managing Director-Worldwide, McKinsey & Company joined McKinsey’s New York Office in 1973, after an MBA from Harvard Business School. He was elected managing director of McKinsey (the first non-Westerner to hold that position) in 1994, at the age of 45. Since then, he has been re-elected twice, once in 1997 and again in 2000. He is a graduate of IIT-Delhi.

Arun Sarin, CEO, Vodafone Plc He was formerly the CEO of InfoSpace, CEO of Vodafone for Asia/Pacific region and President and COO of Airtouch Communications. Mr. Sarin serves on the Boards of Directors of Vodafone plc, Charles Schwab Corp., Cisco Systems, Gap Inc., Accel-KKR. He is also a Director of several non-profit and educational organizations and is a graduate of IIT- Kharagpur.
Victor Menezes, ex-Senior Vice Chairman, Citigroup Victor is responsible for Citigroup’s businesses in the Emerging Markets and covers all of its activities across its corporate and consumer franchises in 80 countries. He also has global product responsibility for e-Business and Worldwide Securities Services. He has served at Citibank in various positions and in various continents since 1972. He is a graduate of IIT-Bombay.
Arjun Malhotra, CEO, Headstrong In late 1998, Arjun founded TechSpan, a global Internet consulting company. He founded and built HCL from a six person “Garage operation” in 1975 to India’s largest Information Technology corporation with over 8400 people. Arjun founded the Prof. G.S. Sanyal School of Telecommunications at IIT Kharagpur through personal endowment of Rs 30 million, and was also one of the founding members of SPIC-MACAY. He is a graduate of IIT-Kharagpur.
Kanwal Rekhi, CEO Ensim, Founder TIE Mr. Rekhi has over 20 years of executive experience at successful Silicon Valley technology companies. Kanwal was one of the original founders of Excelan, a computer networking company founded in 1982, where he was named President and CEO in 1985. Excelan merged with Novell in 1989, and Mr. Rekhi remained at Novell as an EVP 7 CTO. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for The Indus Entrepreneurs Association (TiE). Kanwal attended IIT-Bombay, and earned an MS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, which honored him with a Ph.D. in Business and Engineering in 1997
Narayan Murthy, Founder and Chairman, Infosys Technologies He founded Infosys in 1981. He was Managing Director of Infosys till 1999 and was President of NASSCOM from 1992 to 1994. He is a Director of the Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and is a graduate of IIT-Kanpur.



Vinod Khosla, General Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Vinod Khosla was co-founder of Daisy Systems and founding Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems, where he pioneered open systems and commercial RISC processors. He serves on the boards of Asera, Centrata, Indian School of Business, Infinera, Juniper Networks, Kovio, OnFiber Communications, QWEST Communications, Zambeel and Zaplet. Vinod has a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a graduate of IIT-Delhi
Mohan Sawhney, McCormick Tribune Professor of Technology and Director, Center for Research in Technology & Innovation, Kellogg School of Management. Prof. Sawhney is a globally recognized scholar and speaker in technology marketing and e-business strategy. He has pioneered concepts like business-to-business hubs, metamarkets, synchronization, community-centric innovation and collaborative marketing. Business Week named him one of the 25 most influential people in e-Business. He has received several awards for his teaching and research, including the Outstanding Professor of the Year at Kellogg. He advises large technology companies, governments, and startup technology companies worldwide. He is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum. He is a graduate of IIT-Delhi.
Gursharan S. Sidhu, Founder I2 technologies

He was Founder, Board Member, CTO, Sr VP Engineering of ipVerse. Gursharan was, over a period of 15 years, Senior Director Network Systems Development and then Apple Fellow at Apple Computer. Before that, advisor to the Government of Mexico, Senior Professor at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and in faculty positions at SUNY Buffalo and at Stanford University. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries, and President of the Board of SACHI. He is a graduate of IIT-Madras.

Manoj Singh, CEO of the Asia/Pacific, Deloitte Consulting He joined the firm in 1979 and became partner in 1986. He has been a partner in the firm since 1986. Previously he served as Deloitte Consulting’s Managing Director for the Americas. Mr. Singh is also a member of the Board of Directors for Deloitte Consulting and is a graduate of IIT-Kanpur.
Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, Founder and Chairman, Sycamore Networks, Inc. Prior to co-founding Sycamore Networks, Desh was founder and chairman of Cascade Communications Corp. Prior to Cascade, he co-founded Coral Network Corporation in 1988. His generous donations have made possible MIT’s Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. He is a M.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and a Ph.D. in Data Communications from Queens University in Canada. He is a graduate of IIT-Madras.
Dr. Suhas Patil, Chairman Emeritus, Cirrus Logic Dr. Patil is founder and chairman emeritus of Cirrus Logic Inc. founded in 1981. Previously, he was an associate professor of computer science at the University of Utah and an assistant professor of electrical engineering at MIT. He has an honorary doctor of science degree from Indian Institute of Technology in 1995. He is also on the board of Cirrus Logic, RightWorks, and Aspirian, Inc. He is a graduate of IIT-Kharagpur.



Pradeep Sindhu, Vice Chairman, CTO & Founder, Juniper Networks

Pradeep Sindhu founded Juniper Networks in 1996 and played a central role in the architecture, design, and development of the M40 while running the company. He is now responsible for the company’s technical roadmap and also plays an active role in day-to-day design and development of future products. While at the Computer Science Lab at Xerox PARC, Dr. Sindhu worked on design tools for VLSI and high-speed interconnects for shared-memory multiprocessors. This work led to the commercial development of Sun Microsystems’ first high-performance multiprocessor system family. Dr. Sindhu holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur.

Avi Nash, Advisory Director, Goldman Sachs

Avi is an Advisory Director of Goldman Sachs after retiring as a Partner in 2002. In this role he is involved with several strategic, thematic and mentoring programs for the firm. Avi joined the firm in 1987, became a Vice President in 1989, a Managing Director in 1996, and a Partner of Goldman Sachs in 1998. Avi received a Master of Management degree with distinction from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School in 1981, an M.S. (ChE) from Syracuse University in 1977, and a B.Tech. from IIT Bombay, in 1975.

Umang Gupta, CEO, Keynote Systems Umang Gupta is well-known as an early Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Umang wrote the first business plan for Oracle in 1981 and was the founder and CEO of Gupta Corporation, the first Indian founded public software company in the U.S.A. He and his wife Ruth took the lead in the founding of a Silicon Valley respite care home for developmentally disabled children, named Raji House in memory of their son. In 2000, Umang was the honored recipient of the Asian Pacific Foundation Award for Civic Leadership and Philanthropy. Umang also serves on the board of the Peninsula Community Foundation. Umang received his B.Tech from IIT Kanpur and his M.B.A. from Kent State University.
Raghuram Rajan, Economic Counselor & Director Research, IMF

Prior to holding this post, Rajan taught at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago where he is the Joseph L. Gidwitz Professor of Finance. His research is broadly on the role of institutions, especially financial institutions, in fostering economic development. In 2003, Rajan was awarded the inaugural Fischer Black Prize by the American Finance Association for contributions to finance by an economist under 40. Rajan is an electrical engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. He earned his M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and his Ph.D. from MIT.

Shailesh Mehta, Former CEO, Providian Financials He is the President of Granite Hill Capital Ventures as well as Chairman of Peach Direct, a private label credit card company. Shailesh was previously Chairman of the Board and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation, an S&P500 company. He is Trustee of Cal State Universities and has funded many charitable causes. He is a graduate of IIT-Bombay.



Vinita Gupta, Founder & Chairman, Quick Eagle Networks She founded Quick Eagle Networks, previously known as Digital Link, in 1985 and took it public in 1994. Before that, she held various management positions at Nortel and GTE Lenkurt. She also serves as Chairman of Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute and is a graduate of IIT-Roorkee.
Dr. Naren Gupta, CEO, Quick Eagle Networks Naren co-founded Integrated Systems Inc. (ISI) in 1980 to develop the first products ever for computer-aided control system design. Naren served as ISI’s president/CEO from its formation until 1994 and as its Chairman until 2000. Dr. Gupta also serves on the boards of Wind River Systems, Tibco Software, Speedera Networks and a number of privately held companies. He also serves as a board member for several non-profit and charitable organizations, including the Community Foundation of Silicon Valley, America India Foundation, and is the President of IIT Delhi Excellence Foundation. Dr. Gupta holds a B. Tech. from the IIT, Delhi, an MS from the California Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Prabhu Goel, Chairman, Ipolicy Networks Dr. Goel was previously a Division President and Director of Cadence Design Systems, Inc., and CEO/Chairman of Gateway Design Automation Corporation. Prior to Gateway, Dr. Goel held management and technical positions at IBM and Wang Labs. Dr. Goel set up the Foundation for Excellence in 1994, with the goal of bringing about a transformation in the lives of academically bright but financially needy students in India. Dr. Goel graduated from IIT-Kanpur and received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
